A History of Forrests Music: The Oldest Double Reed Specialty Shop in the US

Forrests Music, a beloved Berkeley institution, has been serving musicians in the Bay Area since 1944. Originally established as a repair shop by Dutch and Kathryn Forrest, the store has evolved over the years to become a premier destination for wind instruments, especially double reeds.

The Early Years
Dutch and Kathryn Forrest opened their repair shop on Kittredge Street in downtown Berkeley in 1944. After Mr. Forrest's passing in the early 1950s, Kathryn continued to operate the business with the support of her friend Ben Meltzer, a renowned woodwind teacher.

Expansion and Expertise
As the business grew, Kathryn moved Forrests Music to larger quarters on Shattuck Avenue and hired Bill Shiek, a highly skilled woodwind technician. Shiek's expertise attracted a clientele that included oboists and bassoonists from major Bay Area orchestras. In response to this demand, Forrests began carrying oboes, bassoons, and their accessories.

A New Generation of Owners
In the mid-1970s, Kathryn retired and sold Forrests Music to Peter and Joan Klatt. The Klatts further expanded the business's focus on double reeds, benefiting from the guidance of Ray and Ellie Dusté, prominent Bay Area oboists. In 1986, the Klatts purchased the building at 1849 University Avenue, which remains the store's home today. In 1999, they sold the business to repair technicians John Goebel and Marilyn Day.

A Legacy of Service
Forrests Music has continued to thrive under its current ownership team, Cynthia Hanson and Audrey Jackson, who have been long-time employees of the store. Their dedication to providing excellent service, products, and instruments has ensured that Forrests Music remains a vital part of the Berkeley community.
